Rafter Tail Repair in Sacramento
Rafter tails are the exposed ends of the roof framing that stick out past the wall. On older Sacramento homes they are often left visible as a design feature, which also leaves them exposed to every storm.
Repair or replace
If the rot is confined to the last few inches, the tail can be cut back and a new end scarfed on. If it extends back toward the wall, the tail is cut out and a new member sistered to sound framing inside the roof.
Which one you need is decided by how far the rot travels, and that is only visible once the covering at the eave is lifted.
This is structural work
- Rafter tails carry the roof edge and the gutter load
- Repairs must tie into sound framing, not just look right from the ground
- Decorative tails on older homes are often reproduced to match the original profile
- Work is performed under our own General Building licence, not subcontracted
Common questions
Can rotted rafter tails just be patched with filler?
Filler hides it for a season and traps moisture behind the repair. Because tails carry load at the roof edge, the rotted section has to be removed and replaced with structural timber.
